Ancillary Products

These are the ancillary products for our media production, we had a number of difficulties when making them. Firstly, we had to retake the pictures for the products because they were deleted off the camera which we used, this was a problem because we had to keep everything the same such as the main protagonists costume. Due to this problem we also had to change front cover for the digipack and the poster, in the original picture the protagonist had his hands up to the sky but because of a recent weather change the synergy would be different between the ancillary products and the video. Secondly, we had to change the inside cover for the digipack because when taking the pictures we couldn't get the angle we wanted, we decided to have a close up shot of the two protagonists in the music video standing face to face to link the video to the digipack.
To make these products we used a combination of computer programs, we used Microsoft word, coral draw and paint. We couldn't  do everything we wanted on one program so we used a number of different ones to get what we wanted. We looked at the research we did on posters and digipacks and decided to add some conventions to our products that are normally used, such as the song titles down the back of the digipack, a barcode, website, star rating, company logos etc.

This is the original design for the digipack, you can see here the changes that we made to the final design.

Final Cut

In the production there is a shot where we layered the shot of the two protagonists arguing on top of a shot of Oh Me Oh My showing up in writing on the white board, this was quite difficult to because we ha to use a program on the Mac called Final Cut but we didn't have it on the Mac we were using. We had to transfer the footage onto the other Mac to use the program, we also had problems using the program because we hadn't used it before. After a lot of experimenting and figuring out how it worked we managed to do it.

So far....

We have filmed most of the shots for our production, there are a few shots we are having difficulties filming due to the location and having to travel there when all members of the group are free. We still have shots to film with the female protagonist, because she is not in our group we have to film when she is free which isn't very convenient. We have been editing the footage as we go along so once we have filmed everything we shouldn't have to much editing to do. Another thing we have to do is layer are shot in the video, for this we need to use a program on another apple mac, this could take some time.

Editing

Once we had finally done all of the filming with the green screen and got it how we wanted, we had to edit the footage together. What we wanted to do was have the main protagonist be on the screen four times at once holding up cards that say Oh Me Oh My, he would appear on the left first, and then three more times to the right.

To do this we took the green screen footage of the protagonist (Jacob) holding the card on the left, we cropped the green screen footage around Jacob to reduce the amount of shadows around, we then put this on top of a background that we had already filmed and saved it.

We opened this up in another project, this makes the green screen clip one shot. We then put the footage of Jacob standing slightly to the right on top of this clip, we repeated this process two more times until we had Jacob in the shot four times holding the cards, lip syncing the lyrics.

I think the outcome was mostly positive, we got Jacob in the shot four times lip syncing the lyrics. There were a few problems with the quality of the shot though, we didn't think it was that clear and looks slightly distorted. We don't think it was a problem with our work, we just think it was because we were limited with the amount of technology we had to make it look professional.

Lighting Experiment

In our production piece we use green screen, we decided to experiment by using the green screen and different lighting. We did this because when putting the video footage onto green screen the quality wasn't good, this was because the lighting we had on Jacob was causing shadows to appear on the green screen. We filmed it again experimenting with the amount of light and where the lights were positioned, this is a video of the different lighting experiments we tried.

We wanted to use the green screen for a shot in the in the video where the main protagonist (Jacob) would be on the screen four times at once and then walk off the screen from the right to the left, he would appear on the left hand side and would appear again slightly to the right until he is on the screen four times. He will be holding up a card each time he appears on the screen with the words Oh Me Oh My and lip syncing the lyrics at the same time.
We experimented with the placements of the lighting so we could reduce the amount of shadows on the green screen, we had a few problems when doing this. Due to Jacob having to walk a long from the right to the left of the screen we were getting a lot of shadows, we experimented to see how we would get the least amount of shadows. We couldn't have too much lighting Jacob so we had to get the right amount, we changed the position of the lamps and changed the amount of light coming out of them. In the experiment video you can see sometimes Jacob goes slightly transparent and at times there are more shadows than others. We experimented until we got the right amount of lighting to use in our production.
Another reason why we were getting shadows was because of the green screen itself, because it was wrinkled all the shadows showed up clearly. We found it hard trying to keep it straight and we couldn't get rid of all the wrinkles, one way we could reduce the amount was by editing. We could crop the green screen footage when we put it on top of another piece of footage, we cropped everything around Jacob to reduce the amount of shadows. This gave our shot a more professional feel, using the cropping tool also made it easier to fit him on the screen four times.

Digipak Idea

This is our design for our digipak, every side of the digipak is going to be a photo from the scenes in the video. We are also using the most popular font style from the survey on the digipak, we have not yet thought of an album title but when we have we will put it on te final digipak design.
